Sheikh Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Head of His Highness the Ruler's Office, opened the activities of the 5th International Conference on Pharmacy and Medicine (ICPM) this morning at the Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park (SRTI Park).
Being held under the theme: ‘Building a Culture of Innovation and Technology in Healthcare’, the 3-day event which will run until April 9, is being attended in person and virtually by experts and distinguished speakers from different leading experts in the UAE and worldwide in the field of medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and dental medicine. There are also a several forums and workshops focusing on clinical and academic themes.
The opening ceremony of the conference on Wednesday began with the playing of the UAE national anthem, after which, Hussain Al Mahmoudi, CEO of SRTI Park, gave a speech where he explained the important role of the complex in hosting exhibitions and conferences centering on vital sectors. He added: “SRTI Park is an innovation ecosystem that promotes R&D, business growth, and collaboration across various sectors, including the academe and international companies.
Sheikh Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi toured the exhibition halls at the conference, where more than 80 companies are presenting their most prominent medical products that depend on artificial intelligence, in addition to existing projects and research conducted by academic institutions.
The conference is being attended by pharmacists, dentists and doctors, pharmaceutical manufacturing companies, dental products and biotechnology, health care providers, professors of faculties of pharmacy, dentistry and biotechnology, graduates of faculties of dentistry, pharmacy and biotechnology, pharmacy owners, health professionals, in addition to health insurance companies, drug distribution agencies, representatives of scientific offices, hospitals and medical centers, a number of non-profit health organizations, and the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP).
Importance of collaboration medical field
Dr. Abdullah Al-Kindi, Chairman of the Conference Organizing Committee, delivered a speech in which he addressed the conference’s role in attracting specialised companies to support the medical field and reach important partnerships that contribute to achieving the goals of the conference. He also highlighted the effective participation of universities and academic institutions that enrich the conference with modern medical research and projects.
Guest of honour
World-renowned scientist Dr. Azad Najar was the guest of honour at this year’s edition of ICPM. Dr Najar is the inventor of the Realheart total artificial heart (TAH), and founder of the Swedish company Scandinavian Real Heart AB. Originally from Iraqi Kurdistan, he has been following the research on heart failure in the Arab countries of the Middle East with a growing concern.
Realheart TAH is the first total artificial heart designed to mimic the structure and function of the human heart. It will replace the patient’s own heart to save the lives of people with advanced heart failure. At the conference, Dr Najar talked about innovations and how the Realheart TAH was developed. He also thanked the ICPM organising committee for holding a specialised medical exhibition.
ICPM will continue until April 9.
